Knowledge Base:: Toner Savings Mode

Question:

What is the difference between PretonSaver and toner savings modes in printers (like Economode or toner save mode)?

Answer:

1. Printer manufacturers have no real incentive to save their customers on toner, because this is one of their major profit centers. Therefore most of the "Toner Savings Modes" are a marketing features and the actual savings is fairly slow.

2. Technical Differences.

"Toner Saving Mode" works in most cases at the hardware level (actual printer), therefore it is difficult to know how they actually apply the savings. There are few common methods that might be used in 'Toner Saving Mode":

A. Reducing printout dpi - changing the dpi form 600 to 300 might save about 5% of the toner . Will usually result light printout.

B. Reducing toner density levels - the printer might change the density form 3 to 1 in HP printers. From our experience this will usually generate 8%-15% savings

C. Depleting Pixel - omitting pixels.

D. Half toning - changing the color form black to gray, this will also generate marginal savings with low quality printout.

Printer may use of the above methods or a combination of the above methods. Printers might be using other techniques which we are not aware of. PretonSaver is using pixel depletion algorithms in order to save toner.
