Knowledge Base:: Policy Override

Issue:

Understanding Policy Override - in case of few policies on the same print job, which policy takes priority and overrides other policies.

Explanation and Example:

Object Override Hierarchy:

In general, the applied settings will be the most specific settings. E.g driver settings is a very general settings it can be applied to hundreds of printers. Printer setting is more specific, it applies to a specific printer, which is a private case of the driver. Therefore, printer settings will always override driver settings. Group settings or application settings is even more specific than the printer because it applies only to some of the printing done on a specific printer, and therefore will override the printer setting.

  • Driver settings

    • Printer settings (overrides Driver)

      • Group settings, Application settings (Overrides Printer the lower wins, see example)

The rules are:

  • The default settings are on Drivers

  • Printer settings override Drivers settings

  • Groups settings override Printers settings

  • Applications settings overrides Printers settings

  • Groups and Applications, the lower is the effective

  • (Group = X, Application = Use Driver, the X is the effective)

  • (Application = X, Group = Use Driver, the X is the effective)

In the following example we will keep track over the text settings of a Printer, a User that print to this Printer from a specific application, we will check when object setting overrides other object setting according to the above rules

Case1 - Printer=low, Group=Medium, Application=High

Expected result=Medium (because the Group\User is lower than the Application), see screenshot, please note that the trace is showing what was the effective policy “Group/User setting override.”

Result = Medium (Text=104 in trace)

Case2 – Printer=low, Group=Medium, Application=Driver Default Setting

Expected result=Medium (because Application is not in the game), see screenshot, please note that the trace is showing what was the effective policy “Group/User setting override.”

Result=Medium (Text=104 in trace)

Case3 – Printer=low, Group=Extra high, Application=High

Expected result=High (Application is lower)

Result=High (Text=106 in trace)

Case4 – Printer=Low, Group=Use Driver, Application=High
